Alumni Spotlight is pleased to announce The Top 100 Harvard Business School Alumni in Finance & Investing. Founded in 1908, Harvard Business School (HBS) is one of the oldest and most prestigious business schools in the world. There are more than 100,000 graduates of HBS, many of whom have gone on to lead some of the most prominent financial and investment firms including Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Bloomberg, Bridgewater Associates, Blackstone, Citi, and others. The Top 100 Harvard Business School Alumni in Finance & Investing were nominated and selected based on their professional track records, milestone achievements in their specific field, impact in the broader business arena, and in some cases, influence on today’s global society and culture. The awardee names that follow represent notable institutions and firms that span banking, asset management, hedge funds, private equity, venture capital, as well as other areas.

1. Jamie Dimon
Company: JPMorgan Chase
Title: Chairman, CEO

Jamie Dimon is the Chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase (JPMC), the largest banking institution in the United States. One of the “big four” American banks (with Bank of America, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo), JPMC is one of the world’s largest providers of investment banking, commercial banking, and financial services. Since 2006, Dimon has served as the top executive of the multinational financial institution, guiding it to tremendous success, and is widely considered a prominent leader in the global finance industry. He joined the institution in 2000 after leaving Citigroup, where he was the chief financial officer. He holds an undergraduate degree from Tufts University.

 

2. Stephen Schwarzman
Company: The Blackstone Group
Title: Chairman, CEO, and Co-Founder

Stephen Schwarzman is the Chairman, CEO, and Co-Founder of The Blackstone Group, the largest alternative investment management institution in the world, holding $584 billion in assets under management. Since founding the company in 1985, Schwarzman has led from the top while developing it from the ground up and growing the firm from an advisory group to a publicly traded corporation with $7 billion in annual revenue. He has recently shifted the firm’s focus toward the ever-growing technology sector, following on its successful endeavors in real estate and leveraged buyouts. He earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University.

 

3. Ray Dalio
Company: Bridgewater Associates
Title: Founder and Co-CIO

Ray Dalio is the Founder and Co-Chief Investment Officer of Bridgewater Associates, one of the most successful hedge funds in the world. Bridgewater, built on a philosophy of radical transparency, currently manages approximately $138 billion in assets. Dalio founded the firm in 1975, and over nearly 50 years, he innovated investment strategies and created positive corporate norms. Additionally, he is a noted philanthropist and has joined The Giving Pledge, promising his posthumous wealth to charities. He is the author of five books, including one set for release in 2021. He received his undergraduate degree from Long Island University (C.W. Post College).

 

4. Ana Botín
Company: Santander Group
Title: Executive Chairman, Executive Director

Ana Botín is the Executive Chairman and Executive Director of Santander Group, a conglomerate of global retail and commercial banks headquartered in Madrid, Spain. Santander Group is one of the largest banking institutions in the world, dedicated to helping people and businesses succeed, and committed to financial inclusion and climate initiatives. Botín joined Santander in 1988, leading the bank’s expansion into Latin America in the ‘90s. She was appointed CEO in 2010 and made executive chair in 2014, making her the 4th generation of the Botín family to lead the company. She received her undergraduate degree from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania.

 

5. Jane Fraser
Company: Citi
Title: President of Citi & CEO of Global Consumer Banking

Jane Fraser is the President of Citi and Chief Executive Officer of Global Consumer Banking. She’s also a member of Citi’s Board of Directors and will succeed Mike Corbat as Citi’s Chief Executive Officer in February 2021, making her the first female CEO at the company. As CEO of the Global Consumer Bank, Fraser is responsible for all of Citi’s consumer businesses, including Retail Banking and Wealth Management, Credit Cards, Mortgage and Operations, and Technology in 19 markets. Prior to joining Citi, Fraser was a partner at McKinsey & Company. She started her career at Goldman Sachs in the Mergers & Acquisitions department in London and then worked for Asesores Bursátiles in Madrid, Spain. Fraser received her undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of Cambridge.

 

6. Seth Klarman
Company: Baupost
Title: Co-Founder, President

Seth Klarman is a Co-Founder and the President of Baupost, an employee-owned investment management fund based in Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1982, Baupost is one of the world’s largest hedge funds, boasting over $28 billion in assets under management. Klarman is an expert in the field of value investing and serves as the Principal Portfolio Manager for Baupost’s overall investment strategies. His 1991 book Margin of Safety, once considered a flop, has become a high-price commodity among investment professionals. He is also an avid philanthropist, and his foundation holds approximately $520 million. He earned his undergraduate degree at Cornell University.

 

7. Ronald O'Hanley
Company: State Street
Title: Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Ronald P. O'Hanley is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of State Street Global Advisors, the investment management arm of State Street Corporation and a global leader with $2 trillion in assets under management. Before being appointed as Chairman and CEO, O’Hanley was president and COO and before that, president and CEO. Prior to State Street, O’Hanley was president of Asset Management & Corporate Services for Fidelity Investments, responsible for all Fidelity asset management organizations and Fidelity’s corporate functions and enterprise technology. He served at Fidelity from 2010 to 2014. Previously, he held positions at BNY Mellon and was a partner at McKinsey & Company. O'Hanley received his undergraduate degree from Syracuse University.

 

8. Bill Ackman
Company: Pershing Square
Title: Founder and CEO

Bill Ackman is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Pershing Square Capital Management. Ackman founded Pershing Square in 2004 and rose to fame for his short of bond insurer MBIA and his rescue of mall operator General Growth. Coming out of the crisis, he at times topped Wall Street with activist wins on Canadian Pacific, Fortune Brands, and Allergan. He is currently the Chairman of the Board of The Howard Hughes Corporation, a trustee of the Pershing Square Foundation, and a member of the Board of Dean’s Advisors of Harvard Business School. Previously, he founded Gotham Partners with fellow Harvard graduate, David Berkowitz in 1992. Ackman received his undergraduate degree in Social Studies from Harvard University.

 

9. Mitch Truwit
Company: Apax Partners
Title: Co-Chief Executive Officer

Mitch Truwit is the Co-Chief Executive Officer of Apax Partners, a British private equity firm with interests and offices across continents. Apax is one of the largest and oldest international private equity firms in the world, raising more than $51 billion in institutional capital over the previous four decades. Truwit earned the top executive role at the firm after successfully leading buyouts of businesses such as HUB International and Bankrate. Before joining Apax, he served in executive roles at notable online travel agencies Orbitz and Priceline. He received an undergraduate degree at Vassar College.

 

10. Jonathan Nelson
Company: Providence Equity Partners
Title: Founder and Chief Executive Officer

Jonathan Nelson is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Providence Equity Partners. Founded in 1989, Providence Equity Partners is a private equity firm focused on media, entertainment, communications, and information investments. Nelson serves on the board of directors of The Chernin Group and Univision Communications and has also served as a director of numerous other Providence portfolio companies, including Bresnan Communications, Eircom plc, Hulu, Language Line, MetroNet (now AT&T Canada), MLS Media, VoiceStream Wireless (now T-Mobile US), Warner Music Group, Western Wireless Corporation (now AT&T Corp.), and Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network (YES). Previously, he was a managing director of Narragansett Capital, Inc., which he joined in 1983. Nelson received his undergraduate degree in Arts from Brown University.

 

11. Tony Tamer
Company: H.I.G. Capital
Title: Co-Chief Executive Officer

Tony Tamer is Co-Chief Executive Officer at H.I.G. Capital, a leading private equity and alternative investment firm focusing on small-cap and medium-cap companies. With $42 billion in equity capital under management, H.I.G. invests across a wide array of sectors such as consumer products, manufacturing, business services, infrastructure, technology, and others. Since founding the firm with Sami Mnaymneh in 1991, Tamer has grown H.I.G. into a global operation with a portfolio of more than 100 companies with combined sales exceeding $30 billion. Before founding H.I.G., he was a partner at Bain Capital for seven years. He received his undergraduate degree from Rutgers University.

 

12. David Levenson
Company: Brookfield Asset Management
Title: Managing Partner

David Levenson is a Managing Partner with Brookfield Asset Management, an alternative asset management firm specializing in real estate, renewable energy, infrastructure, and private equity. He focuses on the firm’s private equity investments. Brookfield centers its investments on high-value, durable businesses and assets and holds over $575 billion under management. Most recently, Levenson served as Chief Investment Officer in Brookfield’s Infrastructure Group focused on growing its transportation platform. Previously, he worked as an investment banker and private equity investor, and he holds the designation of Chartered Financial Analyst. He received his undergraduate degree from McGill University.

 

13. Christian Lucas
Company: Silver Lake Partners
Title: Managing Director, Co-Head of EMEA

Christian Lucas is a Managing Director and Co-Head of EMEA at Silver Lake Partners, a leading global technology investment firm. With more than $60 billion in combined assets under management and committed capital, Silver Lake’s portfolio includes noteworthy companies like Twitter, Dell Technologies, and Peloton. Before joining Silver Lake, Lucas served as Managing Director and Head of the Technology Group at Morgan Stanley. He began his career as a strategy consultant at McKinsey & Company before turning to investment banking where he focused on technology, digital media, and telecommunications. Lucas also serves as a Board Chairman or Member for several companies in Silver Lake’s portfolio. He received an undergraduate degree at University Panthéon-Assas.

 

14. Stephen Mandel

Title: Founder

Stephen Mandel is the Founder of Lone Pine Capital, a global private investment fund and adviser with holdings across many markets. With well-known growth companies like Patreon, Shopify, and Square in its portfolio, Lone Pine manages over $8 billion in capital. Mandel is the President of Lone Pine, oversees its overall strategies, and advises its investment managers. He is consistently recognized as one of the highest-earning hedge fund managers, and his net worth is nearly $3 billion. Additionally, Mandel has founded two charitable foundations - the Zoom Foundation and the Lone Pine Foundation. He earned an undergraduate degree in Government from Dartmouth College.

 

15. Jorge Paulo Lemann

Title: Founder

Jorge Paulo Lemann is the Founder of 3G Capital, a Brazilian-American investment firm specializing in food and beverage brands. Founded in 2004, 3G focuses on long-term value and currently counts large, well-known brands such as Anheuser-Busch InBev, Burger King, and Tim Hortons among its primary holdings. In his native Brazil, Lemann is a renowned businessman and philanthropist and is perhaps most known in North America for leading the merger of Kraft Foods and Heinz. His charitable organization, The Lemann Foundation, is dedicated to improving life in Brazil by investing in education and leadership initiatives, and he is the benefactor of Harvard University’s Lemann Brazil Research Fund. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University.

 

16. Deborah Farrington

Title: Co-Founder and Managing General Partner

Deborah Farrington is the Co-Founder and Managing General Partner of StarVest Partners. Founded in 1998, the New York-based firm invests in technology-enabled business services companies with a focus on SaaS, horizontal and vertical solutions, data and analytics, marketplaces, financial technology, and internet marketing. Farrington currently sits on the Boards of NetSuite, Fieldglass, Insurance.com, Perquest, and PivotLink on behalf of StarVest. She previously held positions at Victory Ventures, Asian Oceanic Group, Merrill Lynch, and began her career as assistant treasurer at Chase Manhattan Bank. Farrington received her undergraduate degree in Economics and Art History from Smith College.

 

17. Pam Holding
Company: Fidelity Investments
Title: Co-Head of Equity

Pam Holding is Co-Head of Fidelity Investments’ Equity Division. Alongside her co-head, Holding oversees all of Fidelity’s equity portfolio managers, research analysts, and trading teams. She was previously the chief investment officer at Fidelity Institutional Asset Management (FIAM). Before joining Fidelity in 2013, Holding served as a chief investment officer and senior portfolio manager at Putnam Investments and as the head of European and international equity research in Putnam’s London office. Holding also served as a senior high-yield bond analyst at both Kemper Financial Services and Franklin Templeton. Holding received her undergraduate degree in History from Princeton University.

 

18. Anne Ackerley

Title: Head of the Retirement Group

Anne Ackerley is the Head of the Retirement Group (RG) at BlackRock, an elite global investment management corporation. With $7.81 trillion in assets under management, BlackRock is the world’s largest asset manager, with a portfolio including Fortune 500 tech companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft. As the Head of the RG, Ackerley unites the defined contributions and retirement insurance businesses with innovative retirement strategies and solutions. She began her career with BlackRock in 2000 as a managing director, working in leadership roles throughout the company, and now serves on the Global Operations Committee. Additionally, Ackerley is a co-founder of the BlackRock Women’s Network. She holds an undergraduate degree from Harvard University.

 

19. Yie-Hsin Hung

Title: Chief Executive Officer

Yie-Hsin Hung is the Chief Executive Officer of New York Life Investment Management. Founded in 1986, New York Life Investment Management (NYLIM) provides its customers with insurance, retirement, and other investment solutions. In her current role, Hung oversees all aspects of the company's global business which spans eight specialist investment management boutiques in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Australia; a diversified U.S. mutual fund in MainStay Funds; and ETF operation in IndexIQ. During her decade-long tenure, Hung has led NYLIM to achieve a three-fold increase in assets under management. Previously, Hung held positions at Bridgewater Associates and Morgan Stanley and began her career as the managing director at Dean Witter Reynolds. Hung received her undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University.

 

20. Scott Dahnke

Title: Global Co-Chief Executive Officer

Scott Dahnke is the Global Co-CEO of L Catterton, a private equity firm focused on growing middle-market companies and emerging high-growth enterprises. Founded in 1989, L Catterton specializes in building consumer brands across sectors. Its investments have included iconic brands such as Louis Vuitton, Peloton, and Restoration Hardware. Under Dahnke’s leadership, the firm’s assets under management have grown to over $20 billion, making it the world’s largest consumer-focused private equity fund. Before joining L Catterton as a managing partner, he held managing director positions with Deutsche Bank Capital Partners and AEA Investors. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame.

 

21. Paul Maeder

Paul Maeder is the Chair and Founding Partner of Highland Capital Partners, a leading global venture capital firm. Highland Capital Partners (no association with Highland Capital Management) prefers to be the first institutional investor in the companies it backs and has invested in more than 280 emerging enterprises, including Lululemon, Athletica, 2U, CheckFree, and VistaPrint. Maeder has been at the helm of Highland for 30 years, investing in outstanding companies across consumer and enterprise technology. 22. Jean-Pierre Conte

Title: Chairman and Managing Director

Jean-Pierre Conte is the Chairman and Managing Director of Genstar Capital, a middle-market private equity firm focused on financial services, software, and healthcare. Genstar partners with management teams to drive transformation and revenue growth. Conte leads the acquisition, divestment, and oversight of portfolio companies in his dual role and has helped grow Genstar’s assets under management to over $10 billion. Previously, he was a principal at The NTC Group and a financial analyst at Chase Manhattan (now JPMorgan Chase). He has an undergraduate degree from Colgate University.

 

23. Brian Golson

Brian Golson is the Co-CEO and Managing Partner at Parthenon Capital, a private equity firm that invests in middle-market companies. Golson serves on the board of directors for several Parthenon portfolio companies, including Allworth Financial and Mid Atlantic Capital Group. 24. Jim Breyer

Jim Breyer is the Founder and CEO of Breyer Capital, a global venture capital firm. Breyer founded the firm in 2006, focusing its strategies on accelerating opportunities for high-impact social and for-profit entrepreneurs. He is a well-known venture capitalist with a winning track record, including leading Accel Partners to an early-stage investment in Facebook. He serves as a board member for several firms, including The Blackstone Group and IDG Capital, and entertainment companies Legendary and 21st Century Fox. 25. John Thain

John Thain is the Chairman of Pine Island Capital Partners, a private equity firm. He is the former chairman and CEO of CIT Group, a bank holding and financial holding group operating in the United States since 1908. CIT provides small businesses and middle-market enterprises with financing, leasing, and advisory services, and its banking subsidiary serves individual and commercial clients in Southern California. Thain successfully led CIT’s recovery efforts after the financial crisis of 2008, retiring in 2016. Previously, he was the chairman and CEO of Merrill Lynch, and before that he served as the CEO at the New York Stock Exchange, leading it into the digital era of trading. He received his undergraduate degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

 

26. Brian Hoesterey

Title: Chief Executive Officer

Brian Hoesterey is the CEO of AEA Investors, a leading global investment firm focused on equity and debt investments in the middle-market. Founded in 1968 as American European Associates, the company began as an investment firm for the estates of several American tycoon families. Today, the company is renowned for investing in small- and mid-sized businesses, including 24 Hour Fitness and Acosta Marketing. Hoesterey joined AEA in 1999, became a partner in 2003, and after 20 years, he became CEO in 2019. Before becoming an executive at AEA, he primarily focused on investments in the value-added industrials sector. Hoesterey earned his undergraduate degree from Texas Christian University.

 

27. Alex Slusky
Company: Vector Capital
Title: Founder, Managing Director, and Chief Investment Officer

Alex Slusky is the Founder, Managing Director, and Chief Investment Officer of Vector Capital, a private equity firm making value-based investments in the technology sector. Vector Capital manages about $4 billion in private equity and credit investments and counts Vesta and Patron Technologies among its variety of holdings. For more than 20 years, Slusky has led the firm with his expertise in infrastructure and applications software, internet services, corporate spinouts, and technology buyouts. Before founding Vector, he worked for firms like Ziff Brothers Investments, New Enterprise Associates, and McKinsey & Company. He holds an undergraduate degree in Economics from Harvard University.

 

28. Natalie Waters Wright

Title: Managing Director, Head of Global Private Equity Investment Operations

Natalie Waters Wright is a Managing Director at Bain Capital, one of the world’s leading alternative investment firms. She is also head of the firm’s Global Private Equity Investment Operations. Co-Founded by Mitt Romney, Bain Capital has acquired or invested in hundreds of enterprises across multiple sectors, managing upwards of $105 billion in capital assets. Waters Wright joined Bain Capital in 2004 as a senior vice president, rising to her leadership role after a decade with the firm. Previously, she worked in several roles at The Boston Consulting Group and was an analyst with Prudential Investments. She holds an undergraduate degree from Middlebury College.

 

29. Kim Lew
Company: Columbia Investment Management Company
Title: President and Chief Executive Officer

Kim Lew is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Columbia Investment Management Company. The Columbia Investment Management Company was formed in 2002 as a nonprofit university subsidiary. Previously, she was the CIO of the Carnegie Corporation of New York and a technology strategist and senior manager overseeing venture capital and buyout investments at the Ford Foundation. Before joining Ford, she worked at Prudential and Chemical Bank. Lew serves as Board Chair of the Stevens Cooperative School and is a Member of the Investment Committees of Wesleyan University and the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation. Lew received an undergraduate degree in Accounting and Organizational Behavior from The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

 

30. Lawrence Golub

Title: Chief Executive Officer

Lawrence Golub is the Chief Executive Officer of Golub Capital. Founded in 1994, Golub Capital is a direct lender and credit asset manager that specializes in delivering reliable, creative, and compelling financing solutions to middle-market companies backed by private equity sponsors. Previously, Golub was chairman of Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a trustee of Montefiore Medical Center, and a managing director of Bankers Trust Company. Before that, he was a managing director of Wasserstein Perella and started his career at Allen & Company. Golub received his undergraduate degree in Economics from Harvard University.

 

31. Michael Grier Eliasek

Title: President and Chief Operating Officer

Michael Grier Eliasek is the President and Chief Operating Officer of Prospect Capital Corporation (PCC), a private equity, debt management, and business development investment firm. PCC focuses on providing capital to middle-market companies, particularly owner-operated enterprises. Eliasek leads the firm’s professionals in the origination and assessment of investments; he also serves on the corporate board of directors. He previously served as a managing director, leading the energy investment group and managing junior investors. Before joining PCC, Eliasek was a consultant with Bain Capital, managing engagements across various sectors. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia.

 

32. Bill Dawson

Bill Dawson is the Chief Executive Officer of Wellspring Capital Management. Founded in 1996, Wellspring Capital Management is a middle-market private equity firm that has approximately $2 billion of assets under management. Dawson joined Wellspring in 2001, was named CEO in 2014, and has chaired the firm’s investment committee since 2004. He notably has led or co-sponsored many of the firm’s most successful investments in distribution, consumer services, business services, and industrial companies. Dawson previously held positions at Whitney & Co and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette Securities Corporation. Dawson received his undergraduate degree from St. Francis College.

 

33. Tucker York

Title: Global Head of Wealth Management

Tucker York is Global Head of Wealth Management, including Private Wealth Management (PWM), Ayco, and Personal Financial Management at Goldman Sachs. Goldman Sachs is a leading global investment banking, securities, and investment management firm. York also serves on the board of the Goldman Sachs Trust Company and the PWM Capital Committee. York joined Goldman Sachs in 1986 in New York. He was named managing director in 1996 and partner in 2000. York serves as Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, Treasurer of the Board of Trustees at The Marymount School, and is a trustee at Christ Church in New York City.

 

34. Don Edwards

Don Edwards is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Flexpoint Ford. Edwards founded Flexpoint Ford, a private equity firm specializing in financial services and healthcare investments, in 2005 and has been the company’s Managing Principal and CEO since its inception. Flexpoint Ford invests in depository institutions, insurance companies, transaction processing businesses, asset management firms, healthcare providers, payers, distribution companies, and outsourcing businesses. Previously, he was a principal at GTCR, a leading Chicago private equity firm. Before this, he was an investment banker at Lazard, where he focused on mergers and acquisitions. Edwards received his undergraduate degree in Finance from the University of Illinois.

 

35. Michael Klein
Company: Littlejohn & Co
Title: Chief Executive Officer

Michael Klein is the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Littlejohn & Co. He co-founded the firm in 1996 and has served as president since its inception through to 2011 when he was appointed as CEO. During his time with the firm, he has led many of its successful investments and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the firm’s activities. Klein also serves on the Private Equity Investment, Distressed Securities Risk Oversight, and Performing Credit Management committees. Klein began his private equity career at Joseph, Littlejohn & Levy (JLL) before acquiring and serving as an executive officer of S&S Industries, a mid-size manufacturing business. Klein received his undergraduate degree in Accounting from New York University.

 

36. David Bailin
Company: Citi
Title: Chief Investment Officer

David Bailin is the Chief Investment Officer at Citi Private Bank. He is responsible for the development and oversight of the firm’s $53 billion alternative and traditional managed investments platform, including the company’s investment management and core discretionary investment management business. Bailin joined Citi in 2009 from Bank of America Global Wealth and Investment Management where he was the president of alternative investment solutions. Prior to that, he co-founded Martello Investment Management, a hedge fund specializing in trading strategies, and held executive positions at two leading hedge fund managers.
