Their critical thinking, market knowledge, and patience provide a foundation for success. The awardees span nearly all industries, including consumer goods, information technology, non-profits, healthcare, and more. While these individuals differ in the strategies and philosophies they apply to their endeavors, they remain consistent in their ability to beat the market.

Based in Toronto and New York, they have over a 100-year history as an owner and operator of real assets, offering a range of public and private investment products and services which leverage its expertise and experience. They have more than 700 investment professionals and 30,000 operating employees working in 20 countries around the world.

Previously, Gupta was a principal and associate at Golden Gate Capital. Earlier in his career he worked with Insight Venture Partners as an analyst. Gupta earned an MBA from Stanford University Graduate School of Business and an MA in statistics and an undergraduate degree in applied mathematics and economics from Harvard University.

 

2. Carl Liebert
Founding Advisory Board Member and Seed Investor, Semo
United States Naval Academy

Carl Liebert is a Founding Advisory Board Member and Seed Investor of Semo. Semo is an insurance company that digitizes the insurance quoting and switching process by making the inputs that drive pricing transparent. He is a global business executive and board member with more than 30 years of experience leading customer-driven digital and technology transformations.

Before joining Semo, Liebert was an EVP and COO at USAA and before that a president and CEO at 24Hour Fitness Worldwide. Earlier in his career he was a naval officer in the US Navy. Liebert graduated from Vanderbilt University - Owen Graduate School of Management with an MBA and from United States Naval Academy with an undergraduate degree in physical science.

 

3. Kenneth Johnson

Kenneth Johnson is an Investor of KKR. KKR is a leading global investment firm that offers alternative asset management, capital markets and insurance solutions. KKR aims to generate attractive investment returns by following a patient and disciplined investment approach, employing world-class people, and supporting growth in its portfolio companies and communities. He began his career in 2015.

Before joining KKR, Johnson was an associate at The Blackstone Group and before that an analyst at Maize and Blue Fund. Johnson graduated from the University of Michigan - Stephen M. Ross School of Business with an undergraduate degree in accounting and finance.

 

4. Glenn Solomon
Investor, Square
Stanford University

Glenn Solomon began his professional career over 31 years ago. Today, he is an Investor of Square. Square builds common business tools in unconventional ways so more people can start, run, and grow their businesses. When Square started, it was difficult and expensive for some businesses to take credit cards. Square made credit card payments possible for all by turning a mobile phone into a credit card reader. Since then, Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Square Capital, Square Terminal, Square Payroll, and more.

Solomon first got his start in 1991 as a financial analyst at Goldman Sachs. From there, he went on to SPO Partners, before eventually moving on to become a venture investor at Nimble Storage, his most recent venture prior to joining Square. Solomon graduated from Stanford University with an MBA and an undergraduate degree in public policy.

 

5. Riyanka Ganguly
Investor, Blackstone
Duke University

Riyanka Ganguly began her professional career nearly 7 years ago. Today, she is an Investor at Blackstone. Blackstone is the world’s largest alternative asset manager. They seek to create positive economic impact and long-term value for their investors, the companies they invest in, and the communities in which they work. They do this by using extraordinary people and flexible capital to help companies solve problems. Its $731 billion in assets under management include investment vehicles focused on private equity, real estate, public debt and equity, infrastructure, life sciences, growth equity, opportunistic, non-investment grade credit, real assets and secondary funds, all on a global basis.

Ganguly first got her start in 2015 with founding PASH Center (Peer Advocacy for Sexual Health) where she served as the president before eventually moving to becoming an overseas investment and business development officer at ByteDance, her most recent position prior to joining Blackstone. Ganguly graduated from Tsinghua University with a master’s degree in global affairs and from Duke University with an undergraduate degree in political science.

 

6. Matthew Doubleday
Investor, 11.2 Ventures

Matthew Doubleday is an Advisory Board Member and Investor of 11.2 Ventures. 11.2 is disrupting the traditional venture capital model by building its companies internally, maintaining control and consistency throughout the growth process and exiting opportunistically. 11.2 Ventures builds, scales, and exits companies by conducting these activities in parallel to increase deal quality and shorten typical venture “idea-to-exit” duration. Through this lifecycle approach, 11.2 Ventures offers accredited investors end-to-end access to venture, encompassing early-stage startup creation through its studio model and high quality, difficult-to-access mid and late-stage opportunities. 11.2 invests the majority of its capital in creating, building, and growing products/companies. Doubleday has over 30 years in the venture industry. He began his career in 1992.

Before joining 11.2 Ventures, Doubleday was a senior vice president of marketing and business development at FIRST Insurance Funding Corp and before that a marketing communications manager at US Auto Glass. Earlier in his career he worked with McLane Company as a communications and training specialist. Doubleday graduated from Loyola University of Chicago with an MBA in marketing and from The University of Texas at Austin with an undergraduate degree in radio, television, and film.

 

7. Michael Lim
Investor, Blackstone
Harvard University

Michael Lim is an Investor at Blackstone. He first joined the company in 2020. Blackstone is a leading global investment business investing capital on behalf of pension funds, large institutions and individuals. Their mission is to create long-term value for their investors through the careful stewardship of their capital.

Previously, Lim was a technology investor at Warburg Pincus and before that, a private equity associate at Madison Dearborn Partners. Earlier in his career he worked with Evercore Partners as an investment banking analyst. Lim earned an MBA from Harvard Business School and an undergraduate degree in economics from Harvard University.

 

8. Scott Persons

Scott Persons is a Seed Investor at Cresco Labs. Cresco Labs is one of the largest vertically-integrated multi-state cannabis operators in the United States. Cresco is built to become the most important company in the cannabis industry by combining the most strategic geographic footprint with one of the leading distribution platforms in North America. It was founded in 2013 and is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Persons has nearly 21 years of experience. He began his career in 2001.

Before joining Cresco Labs, Persons was a director for marketing acquisition strategy at Anthem, Inc. and before that, a director for Medicare marketing at Amerigroup. Earlier in his career he worked with Full Press as an account executive and creative consultant. Persons graduated from the University of South Florida with an MS in mass communication and from Florida State University with an undergraduate degree in mass communication.

 

9. Mark Marinella

Mark Marinella is an Investor and Multi-Asset Product Leader for Capital Group. Capital Group is a private equity firm that provides investment management services for long-term investors. It also offers its services to financial intermediaries and institutions around the world through a broad range of products and solutions which include American Funds. With offices throughout Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America, Capital Group is headquartered in San Francisco, California and was established in 1931. Marinella has over 37 years in the financial services industry. He began his career in 1985.

Before joining Capital Group, Marinella was a founder and president for Three Speech Consulting Group, and before that, an EVP at State Street. Earlier in his career he worked with Credit Suisse as a managing director of fixed income sales. Marinella graduated from Boston College Carroll School of Management with an MBA in finance and marketing and from the University of Massachusetts with an undergraduate degree in economics.

 

10. Nancy Nguyen
Investor, Silicon Valley Bank
Yale University

Nancy Nguyen began her professional career over 7 years ago. Today, she is an Investor of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB). SVB works with technology, life science, cleantech, venture capital, private equity, and premium wine businesses. They provide industry knowledge and connections, financing, treasury management, corporate investment, and international banking services to its clients worldwide through 27 US offices and seven international operations. Silicon Valley Bank’s diverse financial services, knowledge, global network, and world class service increase its clients’ probability of success.

Nguyen first got her start in 2015 as an investment banking analyst at Barclays Investment Bank. From there, she went on to K1 Investment Management. Nguyen graduated from Yale University with an undergraduate degree in East Asian studies

 

11. Gautam Malhotra

Gautam Malhotra began his professional career over 12 years ago. Today, he is an Investor at Noosh. Noosh is the world’s leading independent marketing execution software company, used by enterprises and marketing services companies to bring campaigns to life. Malhotra first got his start in 2009 as an investment banking analyst at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. From there, he went on to Kurt Salmon, part of Accenture Strategy, before eventually rising to become a group product manager at Intuit, his most recent position prior to joining Noosh. Malhotra graduated from Northwestern University - Kellogg School of Management with an MBA and from the University of Virginia with an undergraduate degree in political and social thought.

 

12. Ruminder Dhillon
Investor, PWR Lab
Emory University

Ruminder (Romi) Dhillon began his career in venture capital 13 years ago. Today, he is the CEO and Co-Founder of the Sonoran Founders Fund in Scottsdale, Arizona. Prior to that, he served as the CEO at Arizona Founders Fund, which was ranked as Arizona's most active investor in 2020 by CBInsights. They are leaders in providing high-quality, founder-focused capital in Arizona and the Greater Sonoran Region.

Dhillon first got his start in 2009 as an associate at vSpring Capital & Kickstart Seed Fund in Utah. From there, he went to Arizona to found Arizona Founders Fund in 2016, a seed investor dedicated to Arizona startups. He graduated from Emory University with an undergraduate degree, from Columbia University with a master’s degree, and from Thunderbird School of Global Management with an MBA.

 

13. Ruth Lawanson

Ruth Lawanson is an Investor at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. 15. Alexandra Levitt

Alexandra Levitt is an Investor of Snap. She first joined the company in 2018. Snap is a privately-owned camera company focusing on multinational technology and social media. Snap is behind Snapchat, a photo messaging app that allows users to take photos, record videos, add text and drawings, and send them to recipients. Before joining Peloton, Heller was a board of directors and investor with the Philadelphia 76ers. Earlier in his career he worked with Goldman Sachs as a partner. Heller graduated from Harvard University with an undergraduate degree in American history.

 

19. Ian Sigalow

Ian Sigalow began his professional career over 20 years ago. Today, he is an Investor of Bright Health. 22. Ahmad Ishaq
Investor, SpaceX
The Johns Hopkins University

Ahmad Ishaq is an Investor at SpaceX. SpaceX designs, manufactures and launches the world’s most advanced rockets and spacecraft. The company was founded in 2002 by Elon Musk to revolutionize space transportation, with the ultimate goal of making life multiplanetary. Ishaq has over 13 years of experience. 23. Bryan Lamkin

From there, he went on to Adobe Systems, before eventually rising to become the SVP of consumer products at Yahoo!, his most recent position prior to joining Pure Storage. Lamkin graduated from the University of California - Berkeley with an MBA and an undergraduate degree.

 

24. Ben Stokes
Investor and Partner, Chasing Rainbows
Quantic School of Business and Technology

Ben Stokes is the Founding Partner of Chasing Rainbows, an early-stage investment fund specifically aimed at creating more equality in startup funding by investing in founders who come from underrepresented backgrounds - particularly those from the LGBTQ+ community. Ben previously founded and ran the virtual networking platform SocialTable, with customers on all 7 continents. Using his own experience as an LGBTQ+ founder of color, he has been an active angel investor in companies led by underrepresented founders and has fostered a number through to their exit or next investment phase.

He was a mentor at the Australian Landing Pad in San Francisco, assisting Australian founders who take their start-ups and scale-ups global. Ben has an Executive MBA, attended UC Berkeley’s Venture Capital Program and was selected to be part of both the StartOut Growth Lab, a start-up incubator located in San Francisco, and RBL1, based in Austin. In 2020 he was asked to address the UN General Assembly for their Leaders on Purpose Summit. Prior to becoming an entrepreneur, he worked at Oracle and Salesforce. Ben Stokes grew up on a farm on the North-West Coast of Tasmania after being adopted from an orphanage in Sri Lanka, by a loving Tasmanian family. Ben's mission is to help create a world that's built on radical inclusivity where diversity of knowledge and experience is celebrated. It is the cornerstone for the vision of his fund, Chasing Rainbows. Stokes graduated from Quantic School of Business and Technology with an MBA, from James Cook University with a master’s degree in tropical medicine and public health, and from Southern Cross University with an undergraduate degree in law.

 

25. Joseph Clancy

26. Michael Liou

Liou graduated from Columbia University in the City of New York with a master’s in electrical engineering, from NYU Stern School of Business with an MBA, and from Brown University with an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering.

 

27. Pablo Solano

Pablo Solano is an Investor of SpaceX. He first joined the company in 2017. SpaceX, formally known as Space Exploration Technologies, is a space-transportation startup company founded by Elon Musk. SpaceX designs, manufactures, and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft. SpaceX develops crew and cargo capsules, engines, cryogenic tank structures, avionics, equipment, guidance, and control software. 28. George Strompolos

Dennis Yang has spent more than two decades launching and growing innovative companies around the globe, with a particular emphasis on education technology. Today he serves as Chairman, Investor, Advisor and Board Member to several technology startups. Yang previously served as CEO of Udemy, a global provider of online education that has served more than 50 million students worldwide.

Yang has been featured in or on national media sources such as the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, CNN, Inc., Time, and Fortune. He also has spoken at numerous conferences, including Fortune Global Forum, and appeared on Bloomberg TV. He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Yang is an Alumni Regent for Northwestern University and has guest-lectured for various Northwestern classes and served as an advisor for the Farley Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Northwestern.

In 2000, Tunguz founded Perquimans Systems. From there, he went on to Appian Corporation, before eventually rising to become a product manager at Google, Inc., his most recent position prior to joining Offchain Labs. Tunguz graduated from Thayer School of Engineering with an MEM and from Dartmouth College with an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering.

Mike Vernal began his professional career over 20 years ago. Today, he is an Investor of Rippling. Rippling is a human resource management company that manages employees’ payroll, benefits, devices, and apps. It is a platform that automates manual work, like onboarding new hires. In just 90-seconds, a company can set up or disable an employee’s payroll, health insurance, work computer, and third-party apps, like Gmail, Microsoft Office, and Slack. Vernal first got his start in 2002 as a project manager and engineering lead at Microsoft Corporation. From there, he went on to Facebook. Vernal graduated from Harvard University with an MS and undergraduate degree in computer science.

Dunn earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics, applied sciences, game theory, computer science and econometrics from the University of California, Los Angeles.
